How can we successfully digitize local network stations?

By 2028, Gemeindewerke Grefrath will digitize about half of its local network stations using a retrofit concept, thereby increasing network transparency, supply reliability, and operational efficiency with minimal renovation effort.

Retrofit Instead of New Construction: The Path to a Digital Distribution Network

Gemeindewerke Grefrath demonstrates how a well-thought-out retrofit concept can increase grid transparency and sustainably improve supply reliability.

By the end of 2028, about half of the 120 local network stations will be digitized. The Wega voltage testing system and the ComPass B 2.0 short-circuit and ground-fault direction indicator will be used for this purpose. The measured values and alerts are integrated directly into the control system, thereby laying the foundation for greater transparency in the distribution network and more efficient network operation.

Particularly exciting:

✅ Digitizing existing stations instead of building costly new ones

✅ Field-proven, all-in-one retrofit packages for quick implementation

✅ Rapid modernization with minimal disruption to the existing infrastructure

✅ Improved grid transparency and reliability of supply
